Condition, injury or relaxation treatments

What to expect

Most treatments with this style of massage occur with you clothed in loose light garments and begin with you sitting in an upright chair, allowing the practitioner to work your neck, shoulders and arms, encouraging lengthening and relaxation of the muscles. Even with a lower back problem, this may be the starting point on first treatment because tensions causing a problem are rarely exclusive to the painful area and their origins may be elsewhere! You will then be asked to move to a pad on the floor or to a treatment couch for the practitioner to continue massage through your back and legs as required.

Massage of tense muscles can be uncomfortable, even slightly painful, what many experienced recipients describe as 'benign' pain or 'exquisite' pain, because they know the discomfort means that the practitioner is truly 'reaching the spot' that will give them relief. The practitioner will ask you to tell him or her of discomfort to ensure that treatment is tempered to your needs.

How long are treatments?

Treatments to release tension throughout the body or for specific injuries and conditions are usually one hour though may be longer or shorter, depending on the treatment required. First treatments are usually at least an hour to allow for taking a medical history and background information.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically a condition may take three to six treatments for significant progress, although usually improvement is apparent after the first session, and sometimes one session may be the 'miracle' cure, though muscle tissue normally takes longer to release fully.

Treatments may then become less frequent or even stop but most people find that once they have discovered the many benefits of massage, especially the unique Way Beyond approach, they incorporate it in their lives as an essential antidote to the strains of modern living. How often massage is needed to maintain wellbeing is then largely a matter of balance — the more demanding the lifestyle, the more often treatment will be helpful.

On-site treatments

Short treatments of fifteen to twenty minutes at work are increasingly popular to combat the strain and stress of many jobs, particularly involving hours at computers, as they target the neck, arms, shoulders and upper back. On-site massage takes place with the client fully clothed sat in a chair in a quiet space in the workplace. The benefits of massage in increasing productivity, reducing stress levels and sickness are well-documented and top companies have been using massage to help their workforces for many years.
